A new outbreak of Salmonella infections is under investigation with eggs having been identified as the likely source of the pathogen.
As of the evening of July 24 there are 98 patients in the outbreak that stretches across 17 states coast to coast. Of those patients with complete information available, 26 have been hospitalized. None of the patients have died.
Midwest Poultry Services L.P. has been identified as the producer of the implicated eggs. On July 21 the company initiated a recall of white shell eggs and brown cage free shell eggs produced and distributed from farms in Texas between June 6 and July 3 with sell by or best by dates between July 20 and Aug.17.
The recalled eggs were sold under a variety of brand names and were available at a number of retailers including Kroger stores. The recalled eggs have an identifying code number printed on the left or right sides of the carton in date-coding ink only. Only codes P-1950 or 0840962 with a Julian Date between 157 and 184 printed on the side of the carton are recalled. For photos of some of the cartons of the recalled eggs, click here.
The eggs were distributed in Arkansas Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Distribution of recalled products has been confirmed for states listed, but the eggs could have been distributed further, reaching additional states.
Illnesses started on dates ranging from Nov. 21, 2025, to June 30, 2026. Forty of 44 outbreak patients with information available reported eating eggs before becoming ill.
Consumers, restaurants, and retailers that purchased or received recalled eggs should throw them away or return them to their place of purchase for a refund and disinfect any areas that could have come in contact with recalled eggs.
Laboratory, epidemiological and traceback data have determined that shell eggs recalled by Midwest Poultry Services L.P are a likely source of illnesses in this outbreak.
As part of this investigation, FDA conducted a traceback investigation based on where ill people reported purchasing or eating eggs during the timeframe of interest, and Midwest Poultry Services L.P. was identified as a common egg source; however, this producer does not account for all the illnesses in this outbreak. Additional investigation is ongoing to determine if there are other sources of illness.
Midwest Poultry Services L.P. collected samples at farms in Texas. Certain samples collected by the firm tested positive for Salmonella, and whole genome sequencing performed by the firm’s third-party lab revealed that some samples match the strain of Salmonella in this outbreak.

About Salmonella infections
Food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria does not usually look, smell, or taste spoiled. Anyone can become sick with a Salmonella infection. Infants, children, seniors, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of serious illness because their immune systems are fragile.
Anyone who has eaten eggs and developed symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek medical attention. Sick people should tell their doctors about the possible exposure to Salmonella bacteria because special tests are necessary to diagnose salmonellosis. Salmonella infection symptoms can mimic other illnesses, frequently leading to misdiagnosis.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection can include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. Otherwise, healthy adults are usually sick for four to seven days. In some cases, however, diarrhea may be so severe that patients require hospitalization.
Older adults, children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients, are more likely to develop a severe illness and serious, sometimes life-threatening conditions.
Some people get infected without getting sick or showing any symptoms. However, they may still spread the infections to others.
