Where Was ‘The Menu’ on HBO Max Filmed? Top Filming Locations

The Menu is a dark comedy following Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) as they dine at an exclusive restaurant called Hawthorne. During their time at the fancy establishment, they meet the world famous chef, Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes), who guides them through a tasting menu. This movie first hit theaters in November of 2022, but is currently available to stream on HBO Max.

But things aren’t as they seem. As the night progresses, tensions arise and violent events begin to occur as the chef’s ulterior motive is revealed. Then, it becomes a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Decider’s John Serba teases in his review, “Beneath the surface of The Menu’s satirical ravaging of anything within the contextual fog of the word ‘foodie’ exists the portrait of a frustrated artist who’s reached the pinnacle of his creativity, yet remains deeply unsatisfied.”

Premiering to critic and audience approval, the movie, directed by Mark Mylod, garnered two Golden Globe nominations; one for Taylor-Jor and Fiennes. Alongside the mentioned cast members, the thriller also stars Hong Chau, Janet McTeer, Judith Light, and John Leguizamo, among others.

Where Was The Menu Filmed?

The Menu was inspired by a personal experience from screenwriter Will Tracy. In the studio’s production notes, he recalls taking a boat to a formal restaurant on a private island while visiting Norway.

He said, “I’m a bit claustrophobic, and as we sat down to eat, I saw the boat that dropped us off leaving the dock. It was a small island. And I realized, ‘Oh, we’re stuck here for four hours. What if something goes wrong?’”

This brief thought sparked the idea of the horror comedy that many have grown to love. Tracy brought the idea to his longtime collaborator Seth Reiss and together they created The Menu.

Much like Tracy’s story, the movie takes place predominantly in a singular location that is reached by boat. The production was filmed in and around Savannah, Georgia in 2021 with additional filming locations including Ft. McAllister State Park, World Trade Center Atlanta, Skidaway Island Community Gardens, Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island, Hampton Island Retreat, and Tybee Island.

To create the Hawthorne restaurant, the production team drew inspiration from a number of acclaimed restaurants including Fäviken, El Bulli, French Laundry, and Noma.

The inside of the fictional restaurant was a set and the outside was an existing barn in Savannah, Georgia. The production notes didn’t disclose the name of the barn, but state that it’s typically used for formal events.

The Menu is available for streaming on HBO Max.
