Tony’s Chocolonely recalls chocolate due to stone contamination

Tony’s Chocolonely is recalling chocolate from more than 20 countries, including the United States and Canada, because of potential contamination with small stones.

In the U.S., seven lots of Tony’s brand Dark Almond Sea Salt Bar (6.35oz) and Everything Bar (6.35oz) are affected.

The Dark Almond Sea Salt 180-gram bar has lot numbers 163094, 162634, and M16263 while the Everything bar has lot numbers 4327, 4330, 4331, and M4331. 

Products were distributed nationwide and sold via retail stores and www.tonyschocolonely.com. Distribution began on Feb. 7, 2025 and ended March 24, 2025.

The recall comes after 12 consumers reported finding small stones in the product. All complaints occurred outside the U.S. and Canada, and no injuries were reported.

Small stones between 6 and 13 millimeters in size may be present in the products. This poses a choking hazard and a risk of injury to the mouth.

“If you have purchased one of the affected products with the specified lot codes and have not yet consumed it, you are advised not to eat the product. Please return the product to the store of purchase for a refund or replacement or dispose of the product,” said the recall notice.

An alert published on the European Commission’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) portal shows that other affected countries include Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

In the Netherlands, Melk Karamel Amandel Noga Pretzel Zeezout 180-gram with lot number 4333 is also affected.

“Once we started to receive consumer complaints, we were able to trace the issue back to one of our almond suppliers. After further investigation, it appears that a new origin of almonds in a limited batch was insufficiently processed at the supplier’s factory, resulting in a risk of foreign objects – small stones – being present in the final products that were made,” said Tony’s Chocolonely.
