How to watch, what to expect, and which restaurant will be named No. 1
On Wednesday, June 5, the folks behind the World’s 50 Best Restaurants will once again try to sum up the best of the entire globe’s culinary output in a ranked list. Here’s what you need to know.
When is the World’s 50 Best 2024 awards ceremony and how do I watch?
This year, the red-carpet event will be happening in Las Vegas, starting at 8:25 p.m. PT. The ceremony will be live-streamed on the World’s 50 Best website and YouTube channel (also embedded below); the announcement of the top spot usually happens about two hours into the show.
What to expect from the World’s 50 Best 2024:
The 2023 No. 1 was Central, which resulted in several firsts: Chef-owners Virgilio Martínez and Pia León’s Lima restaurant became the first outside of Europe or the United States to hold the top slot; Central is the also first winning restaurant co-run by a female chef. Because a new rule since 2019 states that a restaurant is removed from the list after it ascends to the top spot, there will be a new No. 1 this year.
Three restaurants in Spain took slots No. 2 to No. 4 last year and are thus the top contenders to take the title in 2024: Disfrutar in Barcelona, Diverxo in Madrid, and Asador Etxebarri in Atxondo. Also worth watching: Atomix in New York City was the highest ranked restaurant in North America last year, at No. 8; while Kwame Onwuachi took home the “One to Watch” award for his work at Tatiana in NYC (the restaurant did not make the official top 50). With that in mind, NYC could have a strong showing on the list in 2024.
What about the World’s 50 Best 51 to 100 list?
The World’s 50 Best organization previously revealed the 2024 list’s “back half,” Nos. 51 to 100, in May. Stateside restaurants included NYC’s Cosme (No. 99), Le Bernardin (No. 71, a drop from its 2023 placement at No. 44), and Chicago’s Smyth (No. 90).
