Nutrition Facts Up Front

Biden’s Food and Drug Administration pushed a major priority of public health and nutrition advocacy groups forward at the last minute, proposing a rule for “front-of-pack labeling.” If finalized, the rule would add a new nutrition facts box to the front of packaged foods “with standardized, interpretive nutrition information that can help them quickly and easily identify how foods can be part of a healthy diet.”  For instance, the box might just  show levels of added sugar, sodium, and saturated fat and clearly state if those levels are low, medium, or high. In other countries, some research has shown front-of-pack labels lead to healthier choices and may push companies to improve the nutritional profile of foods. Public health groups including the Center for Science in the Public Interest and the American Heart Association celebrated the news.

Whether the rule advances will now be up to the incoming Trump administration. Last time he was in office, President Trump generally sided with industry and was hostile to nutrition regulations, but with MAHA proselytizer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. likely coming in to lead FDA’s parent agency, it’s unclear how the administration will treat new regulations like this one in the future.
